Resident Evil: Death Island
🌟🌟🌟 – 7.2/10
Release Date – 25 July 2023
Resident Evil: Death Island is a CG-animated movie based on the popular video game franchise of the same name. It is a sequel to Resident Evil: Vendetta (2017) and features some of the most iconic characters from the series, such as Leon S. Kennedy, Jill Valentine, Rebecca Chambers, and Claire Redfield. The movie is directed by Eiichirô Hasumi and written by Makoto Fukami.
The movie follows two parallel stories: one involving D.S.O. agent Leon, who is on a mission to rescue Dr. Antonio Taylor from kidnappers, when a mysterious woman thwarts his pursuit; and another involving B.S.A.A. agent Chris Redfield, who is investigating a zombie outbreak in San Francisco, where the cause of the infection cannot be identified. Chris and his team make their way to Alcatraz Island, driven by the single commonality among the victims—recent visits to the island. Little do they know, a chilling new terror lies in wait for them there.

The movie is a thrilling and action-packed adventure that showcases the best aspects of the Resident Evil franchise: zombies, bioweapons, conspiracies, and heroes. The animation is stunning and realistic, capturing the expressions and movements of the characters and the environments. The voice acting is also impressive, with Erin Cahill as Rebecca Chambers, Kevin Dorman as Chris Redfield, Matthew Mercer as Leon S. Kennedy, Stephanie Panisello as Claire Redfield, and Nicole Tompkins as Jill Valentine.
The movie also pays homage to the games and references some of the most memorable moments and locations from the series, such as the Raccoon City incident, the Umbrella Corporation, the Tyrant, and the Nemesis. Fans of the games will enjoy spotting these Easter eggs and seeing their favorite characters in action.
However, the movie is not without its flaws. The plot is somewhat convoluted and confusing, with too many twists and turns that are not well explained or justified. The movie also suffers from some pacing issues, with some scenes being too slow or too fast, and some transitions being abrupt or unclear. The movie also relies too much on clichés and tropes that are typical of the genre, such as jump scares, explosions, chases, and betrayals.
Resident Evil: Death Island is an entertaining movie that will appeal to fans of the games and newcomers alike. It is a worthy addition to the Resident Evil franchise and a showcase of the potential of CG animation. The movie will be released in theaters in Japan on July 7, 2023, and on Blu-ray and digital download worldwide on July 25.
