Summary
The film’s strengths lie in its charismatic cast, who have great chemistry and deliver hilarious and heartfelt performances. Pratt is charming as Peter Quill/Star-Lord, the leader of the team who struggles with his feelings for Gamora and his legacy as the son of Ego (Russell), a living planet. Saldana is fierce as Gamora, the deadliest woman in the galaxy who has to deal with her complicated relationship with her sister Nebula (Gillan) and her adoptive father Thanos (Josh Brolin).
Bautista is hilarious as Drax, the literal-minded warrior who provides comic relief and unexpected wisdom. Cooper is witty as Rocket, the genetically engineered raccoon who has a soft spot for his friends and his partner Groot (Diesel), a sentient tree who can only say “I am Groot”. Gillan is impressive as Nebula, the cyborg assassin who has a redemption arc and a bond with Gamora. Klementieff is adorable as Mantis, the empathic alien who can sense emotions and manipulate them. Debicki is elegant as Ayesha, the leader of the Sovereign race who has a vendetta against the Guardians. Russell is charismatic as Ego, the mysterious father of Quill who has a sinister agenda.

The film’s weaknesses are its predictable plot, its over-reliance on CGI, and its uneven tone. The film’s plot follows a familiar formula of the Guardians getting into trouble, escaping from danger, fighting bad guys, and saving the day. The film’s CGI is impressive but sometimes overwhelming, especially in the final battle scene where there is too much happening on screen. The film’s tone is sometimes inconsistent, shifting from comedy to drama to action without a smooth transition.
