It is also very effective in conveying the story’s themes of family and friendship, while also offering a surprising amount of emotional depth. The bear is a great character who is both funny and endearing and serves as a great foundation for the rest of the film.
Summary
The film starts with a drug runner named Thornton (Matthew Rhys) who parachutes out of his plane with four bags of cocaine after being chased by DEA agents. He lands in a Georgia forest where he encounters the bear who eats one of his bags before killing him. The other three bags are scattered around the forest.
Meanwhile, we meet various characters who end up in the same forest for different reasons: Sari (Keri Russell) and Eddie (Alden Ehrenreich), a married couple who are trying to rekindle their romance; Daveed (O’Shea Jackson Jr.) and Syd (Ray Liotta), two DEA agents who are tracking down Thornton’s plane; Bob (Isiah Whitlock Jr.) and Liz (Margo Martindale), two park rangers who are investigating Thornton’s body;
Peter (Jesse Tyler Ferguson) and Tom (Scott Seiss), two hikers who stumble upon one of the bags of cocaine; Dee Dee (Brooklynn Prince) and Henry (Christian Convery), two kids who find another bag while camping with their parents; Olaf (Kristofer Hivju) and Elsa (Hannah Hoekstra), two Scandinavian tourists who are looking for adventure; Reba (Ayoola Smart), a rookie cop who joins Bob and Liz; Kid (Aaron Holliday), a local teenager who also finds one of the bags.

As these characters cross paths with each other and with the bear, chaos ensues. The bear becomes more aggressive and violent as it consumes more cocaine. Some characters try to escape or fight back against it, while others try to exploit it for their gain. Along the way, there are some funny moments involving misunderstandings, mishaps, and mayhem.
Review
However, the film also suffers from some major flaws that prevent it from being truly great. The tone is inconsistent: sometimes it tries to be darkly humorous or satirical; other times it tries to be serious or emotional. The plot is thin: there is not much depth or development for most of the characters or their motivations. The originality is lacking: many clichés and tropes have been seen before in other films.
Cocaine Bear is an enjoyable but forgettable movie that could have been much better if it had focused more on its unique concept rather than relying on familiar formulas.
