Story Line

65 is a sci-fi action thriller that follows an astronaut who crashes lands on a mysterious planet and discovers he’s stranded on Earth 65 million years ago. The film stars Adam Driver as Mills, the pilot who must survive in a hostile environment full of dinosaurs and other dangers. Ariana Greenblatt plays Amy, a young girl who also crash-landed on the same planet and becomes Mills’ companion.

The film is written and directed by Scott Beck and Bryan Woods, who previously co-wrote A Quiet Place (2018), one of the most successful horror films of recent years. They also co-produced 65 with Sam Raimi, the legendary filmmaker behind The Evil Dead (1981), Spider-Man (2002), and Drag Me to Hell (2009). The film is distributed by Columbia Pictures and was released exclusively in theaters on March 10, 2023.

65 is a thrilling adventure that combines elements of sci-fi, action, survival, and horror genres. The film showcases stunning visual effects that bring to life the prehistoric creatures and landscapes that Mills and Amy encounter. The film also features a dynamic score by Marco Beltrami, who composed the music for A Quiet Place and other films such as Logan (2017) and World War Z (2013).

The film’s main strength lies in its lead performance by Adam Driver, who delivers a compelling portrayal of a man who faces his fears and finds his humanity in an alien world. Driver’s physicality and charisma carry the film through its tense and exciting sequences. He also has a touching chemistry with Ariana Greenblatt, who plays Amy with innocence and courage. Greenblatt is best known for her role as Young Gamora in Avengers: Infinity War (2018) and Avengers: Endgame (2019).

The film’s main weakness lies in its lack of originality and depth. The film borrows heavily from other sci-fi films such as Jurassic Park (1993), Planet of the Apes (1968), Cast Away (2000), Gravity (2013), Interstellar (2014), etc., without adding much new or innovation to the genre. The film also fails to explore its themes of isolation, survival, evolution, time travel, etc., beyond the surface level. The film relies more on spectacle than substance.

65 is an entertaining popcorn flick that offers a thrilling ride for fans of sci-fi action movies. It boasts impressive visuals, sound design, music score, and acting by its lead star Adam Driver. However, it does not offer much more than that and may disappoint viewers who expect more originality, complexity, and depth from their sci-fi films.
